COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Ruben Studdard of American Idol fame is the subject of a 30-minute documentary that airs Sunday, March 22, on FOX21, at 11 a.m. The program is a behind-the-scenes look at Studdard's life. It airs with no commercial interruptions.
Studdard won the popular competition in 2003, and has been in the Top 10 on music charts ever since.
He visits Colorado Springs on April 1 and 2 when he appears at the Pikes Peak Center in the touring show of the Fats Waller musical, "Ain't Misbehavin'."
The tour coincides with the release of Studdard's fourth album, "Love IS," and also with his first wedding anniversary. The album is set to release on May 19.
Studdard is married to Surata Zuri McCants, a flight attendant. The couple was married on June 30, 2008. He is now step-father to 7-year-old Khobi.
Born in Frankfurt, Germany, where his father was stationed with the U.S. Army, he grew up in Birmingham, AL. He has sung since childhood, became a jazz fan, and also played football in high school. He majored in music at Alabama A&M University where he also studied opera. Leaving college after 2-1/2 years, Studdard joined a gospel group, "God's Gift," and was with the group "Just a Few Cats" when he auditioned by accident for American Idol.
"A girl who was one of our background singers wanted to audition for American Idol but she didn't want to go by herself," Studdard said. "She asked me to go with hter and I didn't want to, but I went just to support her."
His debut single, "Flying Without Wings," hit the charts in the number two spot on the Hot 100. Studdard's first album, "Soulful," had advance orders of more than one million copies when it was released in December 2003.
Studdard has won the NAACP's "Image Award" for Best New Artist, and has been nominated for numerous music industry awards.
The documentary traces Studdard's life pre-and post-American Idol.
