COLORADO SPRINGS -- Hackers are now attacking the popular social networking site Facebook.
In December, Facebook had 222 million unique viewers, over 100 million more than myspace.
Now internet scams previously seen on myspace and over e-mail are appearing on Facebook.
Facebook is a site based on sharing pictures, videos, and blurbs with friends.
Now hackers are mimicking those notifications to get personal information.
Facebook started as a portal for college students, but it's popularity now extends to people of all ages. And that's what makes it such a good target for scam artists.
"Every time there is a new technology scam artists or illegitimate people get a hold of it," said Katie Carrol, with the Better Business Bureau. "One is you'll get something that says hey I'm in trouble wire money."
Two other scams tell a user a video or picture has been uploaded or is quote "all over."
When that user clicks on the link to see the picture or video, the hacker tells the user to download a "flash" program that actually sends a virus to the computer and steals information.
"It goes to your Facebook account and then it sends the same message to other people without you even knowing," Carrol said. "It's difficult to get off you computer, and we're hearing people have to get rid of their computers."
The B.B.B. says having up to date anti-virus and firewall software makes a big difference.
They also say to be wary about any message that directs you to another site...
Other tips from the B.B.B. include: never wiring money, being choosy about who you friend, and keeping personal information off your profile.
