COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- In response to a number of complaints about reckless and speeding drivers on Interstate 25, Colorado Springs Police will conduct traffic enforcement beginning today.
The Colorado Department of Transportation recently increased the speed limit on the interstate from 55 to 65 mph.
However, CDOT says the average speed is about 69 mph. Along with speed, police say crashes continue to be a problem along I-25.
There will be extra patrols on the interstate the entire week to get drivers to voluntarily slow down and obey all traffic laws in an effort to make the commute safer.
Also today, Colorado Springs City Council meets to discuss how to cut $16.8 million from the 2009 budget. The council blames falling sales tax revenue as shoppers continue to buy less.
In November, sales tax revenue was down 14 percent from the previous year. The city's 2.5 percent sales tax pays for about half the city's $246.9 million general-fund budget.
City officials say public safety will be included in the latest round of cuts.
The meeting will be held today at 1 p.m. at City Hall located on Nevada Avenue.
Update: Troops expected to return home today have had flight delays and are expected to perhaps return home on Wednesday. Soldiers from the 3rd BCT 4th ID and 62 EOD are affected. More information will be made public as it becomes available.
