COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- We may soon see an influx of new Airmen coming to southern Colorado.
Peterson Air Force Base is in the running to house the new Cyberspace Command. U.S. Air Force officials say Peterson is one of six finalists. Pentagon officials plan to pick a home for the new 24th Air Force by June, but the decision has been delayed several times in the past.
The new unit's mission is to coordinate computer network defense and offensive attacks on enemy networks. The 24th Air Force will likely bring about 300 personnel to the base that is chosen.
Also happening today: they make a difference in the lives of young people, and today is the day to say thanks! It's "Thank You Mentor Day," and it's designed to recognize the contributions of so many people who have had a positive effect on so many lives.
"Research shows that volunteer mentors play a powerful role in reducing substance abuse and behavior problems, while increasing the prospects for a productive life," said Colorado Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien.
And in honor of Barack Obama being sworn in as the nation's first African-American resident, students from D-11's Scott Elementary will present famous African-American speeches today.Students will deliver the speeches in the school library throughout the day.
The public is invited to attend. Scott Elementary School is located at 6175 Whetstone Drive.
