183rd Maintenance Company arrive after 14-plus months' deployment

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- After a 14-month deployment, 207 of the men and women President Barack Obama is now in charge of returned home to the Mountain Post Tuesday afternoon.

The soldiers are from the 183rd Maintenance Company.

They provided force protection for 85,000 coalition forces and supporting civilians on the Victory Base Compound. They also provided additional services to all units operating in the multi-national Force-West.

These soldiers are returning home on a historic day for the U.S.

Now President Obama has promised to bring the troops home from Iraq, but that's about the furthest thing from these soldiers minds. They are just happy to see their families again.

"That's the best part of the deployment by far," said Joseph Radermacher.

Waiting those few seconds to be reunited was about as hard as being separated more than 14 months.

(I'll give him) "big hugs, kisses, probably smother him, maybe tackle him," said Christy Radermacher.

"I'm gonna hug him and hand him our son," said Stephanie Button.

"I actually had somebody tell me I needed to keep my calm," said Joseph Radermacher.

"He's enormous. Fifteen months can do that to a child," said Mark Button.

Both the Buttons and Radermachers are good friends and said having each other makes the deployments easier.

"We try to talk every couple weeks," said Stephanie Button.

"She helps me remember what it was like the first time, and I can help her see it will be better," said Christy Radermacher.

Tuesday's homecoming is one that could be permanent for these soldiers, at least from Iraq, as newly inaugurated President Obama has promised to pull U.S. troops there in 16 months.

"I would love that, but you never know. When duty calls, duty calls," said Stephanie Button.

"He's our Commander-in-Chief. I'm sure he'll do a great job. I'm optimistic," said Mark Button.

"I think we still have some work that needs to be done, but whatever the president decides to do, that's what were gonna do for him," said Medina.

These soldiers from the 183rd Maintenance Company are the first of about 4,000 scheduled to come home in the next month.
