COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO (AP) -- The Roman Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs is considering what programs it may have to cut as it faces a budget shortfall of up to $500,000.

Diocese Chief Financial Officer Bob Doerfler says the diocese froze its payroll, halved its mileage reimbursement for traveling staffers, and ended airline travel to help balance its budget for the fiscal year ending June 30. He says the diocese is considering more cuts to offset falling investment income and a 3 percent drop in offertories, which account for half the budget.

The diocese has pledged not to increase tuition at six Catholic schools and is hoping to avoid layoffs.

The diocese's budget in the previous fiscal year was roughly $6.3 million.
