PINON CANYON, COLO. (AP) --

The Government Accountability Office is expected to release two much awaited studies on the Army's efforts to expand the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site in southeastern Colorado.

One study was to examine the military's land acquisition planning and methods. Opponents have complained that the Army did not seriously consider expanding other training areas.

A second study was to examine the Army's justification for needing more land at Pinon Canyon and whether the military was violating a congressional ban on spending money on the expansion project.

Both studies by the investigative arm of Congress are expected Tuesday.

The Army once proposed expanding the site from 370 square miles to more than 1,000 square miles but has since scaled that back to about 525 square miles.
