The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says Thursday's deadly fight started over a stolen iPod
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- New information has emerged about Thursday's deadly shooting in a park behind the Constitution Square Apartments.
The El Paso County Coroner's Office performed autopsies on the two victims Friday morning. They have been identified as 17-year-old Luis Burciaga, and 18-year-old Uriel Rascon.
The coroner said both died from a single gunshot wound to the chest fired from an assault rifle.
The sheriff's office has arrested a suspect, 19-year-old Juan Vasquez. He now faces two counts of first-degree murder.
Investigators have confirmed both the suspect and victims were involved in rival gangs.
Whether or not the suspect targeted his victims specifically has yet to be confirmed, but officials believe a stolen iPod may be to blame for Thursday's fight in the park near Constitution Avenue and Canada Drive.
"It looks like there was a fight that occurred on Wednesday between friends or associates of the victims, so basically it led into Thursday's altercation," Lt. Lari Sevene said.
Sevene said she is not releasing what gangs the suspect and victims were members of, but added due to the nature of the crime deputy patrols have been increased in the Cimarron Hills area.
"For the next few weeks at least, just to ensure there is an officer presence there hopefully to serve as a deterrent so we do not have to deal with retaliation issues," Sevene said.
As for the victims, both were students in Harrison School District-2. Rascon attended Sierra High while Burciaga attended New Horizon.
"The staff and students are very saddened by this situation and today at Sierra High School we did have extra security, and we had a crisis team of counselors working to help the students get through the situation," Jennifer Sprague with D-2 said.
The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information about Thursday's deadly crime to contact them at 390-5555 or to contact the "Safe2Tell" organization at 1-877-542-7233.
