Buster the Bus will begin teaching safety classes this year
FALCON, COLO. -- He is not your typical bus. For one, he has eyes and a mouth. Two, he can talk, and three, he is only the size of a wheelchair.
Buster the Bus is his name, a new arrival in Falcon District 49 to help teach students about bus safety.
"It is one of the most important things that we do, loading and unloading of the bus, and kids are very much at risk to injuries from them making a mistake on their own running in front of the bus or a car," R.J.. Berry said.
Berry has been driving a school bus with D-49 for nearly nine years. He said Buster will make a big difference in the schools.
"We are there already and have been for years, but Buster is a unique opportunity because the children are going to love him," Berry said.
What is even better, all of the money used to buy Buster was raised by community members who also loved the idea.
"Any opportunity to engage students and teach them about safety is a fabulous idea and you have to take advantage of it, and this is a great example," superintendent Grant Schmidt said.
Buster will also make trips out and about in the community. He plans to visit Penrose-Saint Francis Hospital sometime in the near future.
"Any opportunity that we have to bring safety to students, whether they are in a hospital unfortunately or some other setting, we will take advantage of that opportunity," Schmidt said.
Buster the Bus was the brain-child of the district's transportation department who will now run Buster when he visits school's starting this year.
