GREELEY, COLO. (AP) -- Weld County's district attorney will be in court to explain the legality of search warrants issued in an investigation of identity theft and fake IDs used by suspected illegal immigrants filing for tax refunds.
A Weld County District judge ordered District Attorney Ken Buck to halt arrests earlier this month if they were based on information from federal tax returns, which the judge says are confidential.
About 35 people were arrested on identity theft and criminal impersonation charges before the judge's order.
Authorities seized about two years of federal tax returns from a Greeley tax preparer's office that served Latinos. Refunds totaled about $2.6 million.
