Couple has sent 800 backpacks to Kabul filled with supplies
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- After Douglas Morris returned from his deployment in Afghanistan he and his wife started "Colorado for Kabul Kids," a nonprofit organization that puts together backpacks full of school supplies for students in Afghanistan.
This summer they sent off 270 loaded packs to Kabul, but ran out of money for supplies with more than 100 backpacks remaining.
Thanks to generous donations obtained Saturday, they packed up those remaining bags with pencils, paper erasers and much more.
Once they are shipped, it will put the organization's total close to 800 for the year.
"Which is beyond what we had expected, so it is kinda' neat. I think we are actually making a dent, a small dent, but dent nonetheless, to the schools in Afghanistan," Morris said.
Morris said the goal for next year is to expand the effort and get schools involved, possibly doing something like a pen pal exchange.
