Run the live show from start to finish
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A group of District 11 elementary school students are TV stars. Once a week Chipeta Elementary puts on its own live, broadcast for the entire school. The students run the program from start to finish.
"My favorite job I would have to say would be camera, because you get to work with all of the buttons and stuff and I like buttons," fourth grader Sydney Storti said.
Storti is a crew member with Chipeta TV, the school's television station.
Every Wednesday or Friday, Storti and her fellow classmates produce a 30-minute broadcast.
"We always start off with the pledge, then we go to 'Character Counts' with the principal and the psychologist who draw names. From there we go to 'Science Words of the Week' where we have a little skit, and then we end with 'Show What You Know,'" teacher Lisa Sarter said.
Sarter started Chipeta TV about five years ago.
"A lot of our standards are addressed using the TV, like pubic speaking. I think it is important for kids to start young, to learn how to stand up in front of people," Sarter said.
With jobs like camera work, acting as emcee, lighting, and directing, the kids get to dabble in a variety of jobs. Sarter said that is what makes the class great.
"Sometimes it does not work as well as we would like it to. Sometimes we forget to turn on the camera. Sometimes they will forget to record, but it is a good life lesson they learn from that and we still have fun," Sarter said.
Sarter was able to buy her equipment thanks to funding from the district, she said she plans on expanding in the coming years.
