Speeding contest on Academy Blvd. Sunday afternoon

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A Fort Carson soldier has been arrested and jailed after authorities say the car he was racing struck a motorcycle, killing its rider and a passenger Sunday afternoon.
The Colorado State Patrol said 18-year-old Brandon Howard of Fort Carson was arrested Sunday on suspicion of vehicular homicide and engaging in a speed contest.
Howard was allegedly driving a Pontiac Grand Prix at a high rate of speed on South Academy Blvd. about 3:10 p.m. Sunday when he changed lanes and hit a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Authorities say 47-year-old Charles Coggins and a female passenger died at the scene. Neither were wearing a helmet. The identity of the female is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Patrol officials and witnessess said Howard was racing an unidentified vehicle at the time of the crash. He's being held on bond in the El Paso County jail.
