Once storm eases, will plow secondary streets by request
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- With icy snow conditions as they were Thursday afternoon, the City of Colorado Springs continued its Level One, Full Callout with regard to city streets.
Level One is considered a standard snow event and, as needed, the City plows and applies anti-skid material to the streets. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) may be activated during a Level One scenario, depending on the storm’s severity.
A Level One, Full Callout covers 45 designated snow routes, comprised of approximately 2200 lane miles of the City street system.
These primary and secondary routes include all major arterials (thoroughfares), as well as streets leading to hospitals, schools, major places of employment, and key collector streets entering residential areas. During this event, City crews will be applying anti-skid material and/or salt, and plowing these routes.
Once the storm eases and primary and secondary routes are complete, Street Division employees can begin applying anti-skid and/or plowing by request the remaining miles of City-maintained residential streets. During this phase, the Street Division will attempt to clear one lane on each street to assist vehicular traffic for residents.
Most areas of Colorado Springs are being impacted by this event with snow and ice, causing hazardous driving conditions especially on bridges, overpasses and untreated surfaces.
City officials urge motorists to exercise caution and allow plenty of extra time to reach their destinations. The Street Division can be contacted at 719-385-5934.
