Brought home fourth place in recent state-wide competition
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- In this week's A+ News, Sierra High School is proud of its student-run newspaper.
Over the years, they have won dozens of awards, most recently finishing fourth in a state-wide competition.
"I just like it in general, and I like how fast paced it is, and how you have to keep up with currents events and you can not really slack off, and you just go from one story to the next," Kayleigh Mullins said.
Mullins is a senior at Sierra, she is also the school newspaper's Editor-in-Chief. She said she joined the Sentinel as a sophomore and has not looked back since.
"As Editor-in-Cheif I am in charge of the other editors, the staff, I help get the story ideas out, make sure they are edited," Mullins said.
"As the year progressed I became a designer, and I fell in love with designing so I just decided to stick with that and I like doing it," J.D. Osorio said.
Osorio is also a senior and the Sentinel's Chief Designer. He said he loves the creativity involved with layout and added the paper has helped him in his English classes.
"When I first joined I was taking an advanced placement English class at the same time, and combined, both of the classes just fixed up my writing," Osorio said.
The staff, with the help of their teacher Duane Roberson, publishes eight issues per year. Their sections include feature, campus, opinion and sports. Mullins said her staff takes pride in their work.
"Everytime we go to competitions I get more and more competitive. I want to double the awards each time," Mullins said.
She said the Sentinel is a great learning experience and added the skills her staff has learned will help them in the future.
"It definitely teaches you how to balance your time," Mullins said.
The Sentinel Staff covered Vice-President Elect Joe Biden's speech in their gym last month, they said it was an amazing learning experience.
