Over 90 students participating, 40 new inductees this year.

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- In this week's A Plus News, District 11's Mitchell High School is proud of its National Honor Society. Dozens of students have joined and are now preparing to make a difference in their community.

"It is good academically, it shows school pride. You are involved with the school and community because we do a lot of community service events," NHS President Ben Kidder said.

Kidder is a senior at Mitchell, he is also president of the school's National Honor Society.

He said the group has more than 90 students participating. Of those, 40 were new inductees this school year.

"Just because of the area, I think a lot of people have their thoughts about Mitchell, but really the kids here are the greatest kids and we have great teachers," Kidder said.

Vice President Timothy Eberhart said they have the highest numbers in the district. He said it was a no-brainier when he decided to join.

"It was an easy way for me to get community service and hang out with a lot of friends and be part of a club that the whole school can be proud of," Eberhart said.

He said with the help of their teacher, Kris Gibbs, the students have worked to recruit as many teens as possible.

"Telling students that it is great fun, and it does not require too much besides keeping good grades and doing community service," Eberhart said.

The group has already planned a number of events for the upcoming holiday season including a food and toy drive. But first, they are hosting a safe trick or treat night at their school.

"We have all the hallways decorated, which is really cool. We give out candy, we are all dressed up. It is just a really safe environment for your kids and a really good time," NHS Secretary Katelyn Hogan said.

"Safe Trick or Treat" at Mitchell High School is Wednesday, October 29, from 6-8 p.m. It is free and open to the public, although there is a $3 charge for the haunted house.
