CSPD gets break in cold case
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs police have made two arrests in a more than six-year-old murder investigation.
Witnesses say 29-year-old Cornelius Dowdell was shot to death at the Cedar Creek Club Apartments on South Chelton Road in the Springs on July 10, 2002.
Police never linked anyone to the crime until this month.
They served 27-year-old Kentswan Davis and 31-year-old Clifford Dupree arrest warrants in the last week.
Both are charged with first degree murder for Dowdell's death.
Both men were already serving time for other crimes.
Davis is in a Louisiana prison for a separate homicide.
Dupree in Colorado Springs at the Cheyenne Mountain Re-Entry Center for burglary and forgery.
Both will be transferred to the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.
"It was diligent work by our homicide detectives. We don't take any of these unsolved cases for granted," says Lt. David Whitlock.
Police would not give specifics about how they connected these two men to Dowdell's murder because they believe more people were involved and plan to make future arrests.
Police usually classify a case like this as a "cold" case after one year.
Lt. Whitlock tells FOX21 News the likelihood of solving a crime drastically decreases after the first couple months.
Dowdell's homicide remains under investigation.
