HARLINGEN, TEXAS -- Gas prices continue to fall around the United States but have done so dramatically in the Lone Star State.

Fuel prices have been on a nationwide decline for the past two weeks.

Texas gas stations fell below the $3 per gallon mark more than a week ago and now appear poised to fall below the $2 per gallon mark in some areas of the state.

Gas prices averaged $2.59 per gallon in Texas but gas stations in the Rio Grande Valley along the U.S./Mexico border are selling gas far below the state average.

Just less than 20 miles away from the Rio Grande, gas stations in Harlingen were selling gas for  $2.02 per gallon on Monday.

Officials said the cheap gas prices are attributed to proximity to refineries and seaports where oil is received from overseas.

But those same officials said the good times may not last forever.

OPEC leaders are expected to meet in an attempt to decrease production and raise the price of oil.
