DENVER (AP) -- So far, Mitt Romney is taking an unexpected approach to campaigning in Colorado, a battleground presidential state.

Instead of campaigning in the vote-rich Denver suburbs, Romney is heading again to western Colorado. Romney is holding a town hall-style event Tuesday in Grand Junction, where Republicans typically win by large margins. Romney was in Craig talking to coal miners in May, and he also visited Fort Lupton in May.

None of those visits hit the heavily populated counties outside Denver where a large number of independent voters could determine who wins Colorado's presidential contest.

Some Denver-area Republicans say Romney needs to pay more attention to the population centers, while many rural Republicans say Romney is smart to first fire up the GOP base in rural Colorado.
