COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The election of Pope Francis I brought excitement to Colorado Springs Catholics.

Bishop Michael Sheridan appreciated the tradition and drama of the day, exclaiming, "There's nobody that does drama better than the Catholic Church."

He said what was especially surprising was Pope Francis' age. Many anticipated a younger leader. The supposed second-choice in the conclave electing Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis is 76 years old.

Bishop Michael said one of the most memorable moments in his Catholic life was John Paul I establishing the new papal name, and Pope Francis' decision to start another name is an indicator of His Holiness' individuality.

"I thought, "Oh boy! Changing it and coming up with your own name!," he said, "He's going to be his own man."

Still to be established is whether his name is honoring the Jesuit saint, Francis Xavier, or more popular St. Francis of Assisi, the former's influence.

Bishop Michael said it doesn't matter so much which saint, but that both the Franciscan way and Jesuit are descriptive of his selfless lifestyle.

"He's very humble, he got rid of the bishop's residence, and now just lives in a little simple apartment, takes the bus around town, he's a priest of the people."

Sister Dorothy Schlaeger, a Sister of Saint Francis, said her community was elated by the nod to their namesake.

"It's because he didn't find value in those material things," explained Sister Dorothy, "but he wanted to live simply and humbly as Jesus did."

She and the Bishop agree that a request by the Pope, after praying for Benedict XVI's journey to heaven, was indicative of his servant leadership.

Pope Francis I said, "First, I ask a favor from you. Before the bishop blesses you, I ask that you pray to the Lord, so that He blesses me."

A loud applause followed this request, which Sister Dorothy said exemplifies everything her patron saint stood for: compassion and peace, and service to all people.

"I think it carries even more significance," she explained, "because of what the Franciscan values are: caring for the poor, for everyone, and so deeply valuing all of life."

Sister Dorothy added she hopes his love for all life will rub off on not just Catholics but people everywhere.
