COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Wednesday was an exciting day for one family who lost their home in the Waldo Canyon Fire.
They broke ground on a new home, just miles away from where their old one burnt down.
The Scarangella Family lived in the Mountain Shadows Neighborhood on Huffman Court.
Their home was the only one in the cul-de-sac that was completely destroyed by the Waldo Canyon Fire.
Since the fire, the Scarangellas have moved seven times, most recently into an apartment.
As for their new home, the family has decided to relocate to the Peregrine Neighborhood.
On Wednesday they broke ground on the home, which has been designed to accommodate their daughter who uses a wheelchair.
"My mom and step-dad, they told me the house was gone, and I was in complete shock, " Maddie Olson, who lost her home, said.
Olson has not been back to her old neighborhood since she was evacuated on June 23.
Instead, she prefers to remember her home on Huffman Court like it was.
"I have had my moments, but I am ready to move forward and have a new house," Olson said. "I am ready to just get started with a new life."
Which is exactly what Olson and her parents, Hank and Kathy Scarangella, are doing.
The family said the move will be their eighth, and final.
"It is nice to break ground, it took forever for us to find the lot and everything," Olson said.
What makes this story even more special, is the home is being built by David Hammer of Hammer Homes.
Hammer can relate to Olson, because he too uses a wheelchair.
"We are designing a ranch style level with an elevator, completely wheelchair accessible," Hammer said. "It will have minimal hallways, wide doors, lower light switches and roll-in showers."
"He has been amazing, and we will always continue to be good friends," Olson said.
Weather pending, the family hopes they will be able to move into their new home in five to six months.
Until that day, Olson said she plans to keep her distance.
"I love the show 'Extreme Makeover,' so I figure 'What the heck' I just want it to be a big surprise," she said.
