COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Over the years we have seen all kinds of specialty gyms open in Southern Colorado.

Some successful, others not.

Now, a new type of gym is opening across the state and the nation.

And so far they are a huge success, because they are based on an exercise routine that is unlike any other.

CrossFit was developed in 2000, but did not hit the map until a few years ago.

That is when fitness gurus, gyms, and individuals alike discovered how affective the workout is.

"It is constant, varied and functional movements that are performed at high intensity, Eric Allen, Co-Owner of CrossFit Continuum said. "The beauty of it is it benefits everybody."

"I am always working to make something better, always working to achieve something new," Andrea Tapia, Co-Owner of CrossFit Continuum said. "I love what it does for our members."

Several times a day, hidden in a back room of a Colorado Springs strip mall, you will find a group of moms, dads, athletes, local professionals and their trainers giving it all they have got.

"If you take every aspect of fitness, whether it is power lifting, olympic lifting, aerobics and put them all into one workout and cranck up the intensity, that is CrossFit," Allen said. "At one point if might have been for that person that is an elite exerciser, but now it has trickled down so that every movement in CrossFit can be scaled."

"I love to see people celebrating successes, and see people getting stronger and better and healthier," Tapia said. "It is just unmatched to anything we have done so far."

In a nutshell, CrossFit workouts are typically shorts, 20 minutes or less, and include intense and demanding movements.

"If you look at our population there might be a few elite exercisers, but otherwise it is just your average nine to five worker to wants to get into better shape," Allen said.

That is why Allen, Andrea and her husband James, and their friend Marilee started CrossFit Continuum a year ago.

To share their passion for the fitness routine.

"Eric is certified as a trainer, and started training Marilee and I at the gym," Tapia said. "We would work with whatever equipment we had available, and pieced together little workouts."

"From there we basically started working out in Andrea and James' garage," Allen said.

In April, CrossFit Continuum moved to their new location at Union and Academy, and now have around 60 clients.

One of which just achieved her first, un-assisted pull up.

"I was so excited, I have been working at that for a long time," she said.

Of course, what kind of reporter would I be if I did not attempt the workout.

The challenge, a 50 meter row, 40 air squats, 30 sit-ups, 20 push-ups, and ten ring pull-ups, all as fast as I can.

My total time, eight minutes and 32 seconds.

"I think what it boils down to is everyday you get the chance to see someone who when they first started could not do something, and there they are three months down the road when they are ready to try new stuff," Allen said. There are also nutrition programs associated with the workouts that can also be tailored.
