DENVER (AP) -- An immigrant tuition bill has gotten its first-ever support from Republicans in the Colorado Senate.

The Senate is controlled by the Democrats, but three Republicans spoke in favor of the bill Friday as the Senate gave initial approval on an unrecorded voice vote.

One more formal vote is required next week before the tuition measure moves to the House, which is expected to approve it, too. Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper has said he backs the bill.

The bill allows Colorado residents to receive in-state tuition rates even if they're illegal immigrants. Currently those students have to pay higher out-of-state rates.
