COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Fort Carson has now preferred charges against the soldier accused of killing a woman back in February.
Sgt. Montrell Mayo is accused in the Valentine’s Day strangulation death of Cpl. Kimberly Walker. She was found dead in the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
He is charged with two specifications of murder. Authorities said he is being placed under pre-trial confinement at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.
After a murder warrant was issued for him, Mayo surrendered to authorities in Greenville, S.C. He was then extradited back to Colorado Springs.
Mayo, according to military officials, was assigned to the 759th Military Police Battalion. Walker was stationed in Fort Riley, Kan.
Mayo faces a maximum sentence of life without parole, forfeiture of pay and a dishonorable discharge, if convicted.
