DENVER (AP) -- The judge in the Colorado theater shooting case says defendant James Holmes can be medicated for interviews by psychiatrists if he pleads not guilty by reason of insanity.

Judge William Sylvester said in a document released Monday that Holmes also could be given a polygraph examination as part of an evaluation to determine if he was legally insane at the time of the July 20 shootings that killed 12 and injured 70.

Holmes is scheduled to enter a plea on Tuesday.

His lawyers have objected to the use of medication during questioning by psychiatrists, saying it would violate his rights.

Sylvester included the use of the technique, called a narcoanalytic interview, in an advisory that Holmes would have to sign if he pleads not guilty by reason of insanity.
