DENVER (AP) -- A lawsuit challenging Colorado's school funding as unconstitutional goes before the state Supreme Court in an epic case that can have far-reaching implications on the budget.

The case being argued Thursday aims to settle a years-long debate over how to fund school districts across the state so that all students have access to the same technology and latest curriculum.

Government attorneys have said in court filings that school funding should be up to lawmakers and that the judicial system shouldn't breach their power.

Parents and 21 school districts, most in rural Colorado, filed the lawsuit in 2005. They argue the state has violated its constitutional promise of proving a "thorough and uniform" education system.

State attorneys main Colorado has met its obligation and can't afford to increase school funding.
