MONUMENT, COLO. -- Family and friends held a fundraiser today for the two children stabbed and killed last week.

It happened at a home near Woodmen and Marksheffel around 11:15 p.m., Wednesday.

The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Ethan Courrau. He also died.

Hayrides and firefighter visits bringing smiles to young children's faces at the event on Front Street in Monument. But their presence at Sunday's barbecue fundraiser represents a community coming together after this tragic event.

"It was just out of the blue, no one expected it, and they were caught off-guard.," explained family friend Daren Weissenburger, "So anything and everything would help."

Daren brought the event together to raise funds for 3-year old Ryan and 1-year-old Scarlett.

"We wanted to do everything we could to help the family with this situation, paying for memorial costs and funeral costs," he said.

When deputies arrived at the kid's home Wednesday night, Scarlett had died from stab wounds, and ryan held on until he reached the hospital.

The money raised today and through ENT Federal Credit Union will provide the kids with a proper burial.

Grocery stores, restaurants and local businesses donated food, money and supplies to make the day a success.

The turnout was reassurance of the support their family has seen since Wednesday's events.

"The community has just blown me away," Weissenburger said, "It was such short notice, we had about 24 hours and i think we pulled it through."

If you'd like to donate to help the family out you can find drop boxes in Monument at La Casa Fiesta, The Coffee Cup, Rosie's Diner, O'Malley's Pub and more. You can also go to your local ENT Federal Credit Union.
