COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The future of Wasson High School continues to hang in the balance.

Colorado Springs School District 11 discussed the school during a board meeting Wednesday night.

Wasson High is on the chopping block for budgetary reasons.

No decision was made Wednesday night on Wasson's future, as the issue was a non-action item.

The board has proposed consolidating District 11's five high schools to four.

That would entail closing Wasson High, and integrating the students into Coronado, Doherty, Mitchell and Palmer.

So why the closure?

According to District 11 officials, Wasson does not enroll sufficient students to provide a full offering of courses a comprehensive high school must have for its students.

By transitioning to four high schools, officials said the district will be better able to provide equal access for all students to a variety of classes and programs.

Of course there are a lot of emotions involved in the decision, as Wasson High has been around for decades, and is a special place for many students, teachers, parents and alumni who have a lot of T-Bird pride.

The board also discussed the future of several other D-11 schools, including the Bijou School, which could potentially be moved over to the Wasson campus should the high school close.

A final vote is scheduled for February 6, 2013.
