COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. (AP) -- Fort Carson and El Paso County opened the largest public outdoor shooting range in Colorado. A ceremony was held at Cheyenne Mountain Shooting Complex this morning in honor of the completion of the four-year project.
"We've got some excitement," said El Paso County Commissioner, Amy Lathen. "We're gonna have a ceremony, a few speeches, thanking a lot of the key people who were involved in making this happen."
The complex is a joint project of Fort Carson, El Paso County, El Paso County Sheriff's Office, the U.S. Forest Service, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
The 400-acre site is near Interstate 25. It has seven shooting ranges for now, but there are plans to add to the complex as more funding becomes available. The range is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. The cost for range use is $10 per person. Profits from the range will be used for the Fort Carson FMWR program, supporting soldiers and their families.
Cheyenne Mountain Shooting Complex is located off Interstate 25 at exit 132 (Gate 20). Signage to the range will direct you to the south side of the street.
