COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- As the rebuilding process continues following the Waldo Canyon Fire, residents are beginning to talk about ways to renovate Mountain Shadows Park.

The City of Colorado Springs hosted a community meeting Wednesday night at Chipeta Elementary to discuss the possibilities for renovating the park.

"We have heard from many people that the park and Chipeta Elementary kind of serve as a hub for the neighborhood," City Planner Chris Lieber said.

The June wildfire killed two people, and destroyed 346 homes in the Mountain Shadows Neighborhood.

Residents who were directly impacted by the fire said it is important to move forward, but also not forget.

"It is the biggest wildfire Colorado has ever seen, in damage not acreage," Jolene Butler said.

Butler's home was severely damaged in the fire.

She said it is encouraging to know the city is willing to put money and time into the park.

"Just that gives us hope of the rebuilding," Butler said.

Before anything is done to the park, Lieber said they will consider input from citizens, the Mountain Shadows Community Association and other nearby homeowners associations.

"This is a neighborhood park, and it is really intended to serve the Mountain Shadows Neighborhood," Lieber said. "The facilities here should really reflect their values and hopes."

Because the park is located next to Chipeta Elementary, the city is also working with District 11 to integrate the school grounds and facilities.

Officials said they hope to break ground in June.

"Then be able to make some improvements over the course of the summer, and hopefully wrap things up by fall," Lieber said.

If you were not at Wednesday night's meeting, a second identical workshop has been planned for Saturday, January 12.

It will be held at Chipeta Elementary from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
