The flu has taken the life of a Pueblo County woman.

Public Health officials say the middle-aged woman was the first hospitalized flu case in Pueblo, and died from the flu and its complications. Her name or age has not been released.

"My heart goes out to the family and friends, it’s a tragedy that such a young woman would pass away from flu and it’s complications." stated Dr. Christine Nevin-Woods public health director at the Pueblo City-County Health Department.

Officials say it's not too late to get a flu shot.  Patients most at risk are those with diabetes, the very young and very old, and those with lung disease.

The flu season arrived about four weeks earlier than normal in Colorado, and there have been over 100 hospitalizations so far in the state. The CDC says up to 36,000 Americans die from flu-related illness each year.
