FORT CARSON, COLO. (AP) -- Supporters of a plan to increase opportunities for women soldiers in combat say many of them are concerned about applying for combat positions at Fort Carson.

According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, fewer than 1 in 5 of the women offered the chance to move into combat-related positions at Fort Carson took advantage of the opportunity in a pilot project that is ending soon.

Four women, including three reservists and a Marine set to move from active duty to reserve, filed a lawsuit Tuesday challenging a ban on women in combat.

The pilot project allowed women to request a transfer into four jobs previously off-limits to women, including tank, artillery and Bradley Armored Fighting Vehicle maintenance. A fourth job allowed women to be radar operators subject to enemy fire.
