COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The trial of a former Colorado Springs police officer returns to court after a verdict on more than 100 counts couldn't be reached in his first trial.

Former CSPD officer and school resource officer Joshua Carrier was accused of more than 200 criminal charges including sexual assault and possession of child pornography.

Last March Carrier was found guilty on 21 counts of sexual exploitation of a child.

Carrier was found not guilty on some of the other charges but 150 counts came back as no verdict.

Tuesday a new trial against Carrier began on those counts that came back undecided.

Both sides starting from scratch with a brand new 16 member jury.

Opening statements were heard Tuesday before the first witness was called to the stand.

The prosecution is trying to prove that 22 children were sexually assaulted by Joshua Carrier.

The prosecution said most of the victims were members of the Horrace Mann Middle School wrestling team where Carrier volunteered as a coach.

They said Carrier inappropriately touched the young boys during skin checks.

Meanwhile the defense has added to their case.

The defense claimed that the media sensationalized Carrier's arrest and cause parents to panic.

They said Carrier conducted the skin checks out of a genuine concern for the kid's safety looking for ring worm and MRSA.

The defense also said that Carrier struggled with homosexual feelings and took to the internet to explore.

They said some of the sites Carrier visited did contain child pornography but Carrier wasn't looking for that and quickly deleted those images.

The defense also accused some of the witnesses of fabricating their stories because of money and family dynamics.

The trial is expected to last around six weeks.
