The officer who was shot twice early Wednesday morning was shot with a BB gun. One of the pellots went into his head and was removed at the hospital.

Detectives said they found eight shell casings at the scene where the original shooter's body was found, but they have not linked the casings to the officer's gun yet.

Colorado Law authorizes law enforcement officers to use lethal force when confronted with imminent death or someone else is confronted with imminent death," Pueblo Police Chief Luis Velez said. "A weapon was leveled at the officer, and the officer was shot."

The man who originally opened fire and was eventually killed was 21 years old, but his name has not been released.

"We (the city of Pueblo) pray for the deceased and his family and also to the Pueblo Police officer, his family and the Pueblo Police Department," City Council President Chris Kaufman said.

PUEBLO, COLO. -- Pueblo Police officers, in conjunction with other city, county and state law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that left one person dead.

According to officers, a man was shooting out car windows while riding a bike in the area of Hollywood Drive and Canterbury Lane around 6:46 a.m. Wednesday. The person who reported him to police followed him until an officer arrived.

The officer met the suspect behind a local business in the 2000 block of Columbia Drive, and the shooter fired on the officer, hitting him twice. The officer returned fire, hitting and killing the shooter.

The officer was taken to an area hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

Officers have not released any other information but said the department is teaming up with the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office, the Colorado State Patrol and the 10th Judicial District Attorney's Office for the investigation. Investigations are protocol when an officer is involved in a shooting, and the officer will likely be put on paid administrative leave until it is complete.
