COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A Fort Carson soldier is facing charges in the death of his 10-month-old stepson.

Police were called to the boy's home Friday night where the child was found unconscious but breathing.

He was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

His stepfather Pfc. Zachary Doggett was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder and Child Abuse Resulting in Death.

Monday the 20-year-old appeared in court for a video advisement.

According to Doggett's arrest affidavit the stories about how the 10-month-old ended up in the hospital were inconsistent.

Doggett first told police the boy rolled off the couch and hit the wooden floor.

He said he placed the child in his crib and when he came back to check on him 10 to 15 minutes later the baby was making a gurgling sound.

He told police he tried to wake the baby but got no response. He said he picked up the baby who was limp and "like a rag doll."

Doggett told police he shook the baby three separate times with the strength of 5 on a 1 to 10 scale.

He said he then tried calling 9-1-1 but no one answered.

Doggett said he then called the baby's mother asking her to come home and she called 9-1-1.

But when talking to police the following day Doggett said the baby also struck his head twice more while in the bathroom.

Doggett told police after the boy fell off the couch he took him to the bathroom to clean him up.

He said the child fell forward and struck his head on the porcelain sink and then fell backwards, hitting his head on the wood floor.

He said the child laid on the floor and didn't cry.

Doggett said he placed the child back in the crib but knew something was wrong because "you don't slam your face into a sink and crack your head on the floor and not cry."

Doggett said he didn't tell the boy's mother about the fall because he was scared and didn't want to go to jail.

An autopsy completed by the El Paso County Coroner's office found multiple skull fractures and bleeding on the brain.

The cause of death determined to be blunt force trauma to the head and manner of death a homicide.

This is the city's first child homicide victim of 2012 and the 18th homicide this year.

Doggett is being held without bond.
