DENVER -- The man accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others in a movie theater July 20 is facing 142 criminal charges.
A judge announced charges against James Holmes during a court appearance Monday morning.
Among the 142 charges are 24 first degree murder and 116 attempted first degree murder charges, which equates to two charges for each victim. He faces two other charges including explosives and violence.
Holmes is accused of firing an assault rifle at a crowd in the Century 16 theater in Aurora, Colo. during the midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises."
No date has been set for Holmes' plea, but legal analyssts expect his defense to be dominated by arguments over his sanity.
