Care and Share, the food bank in Colorado Springs, has collected one million pounds of food in the wake of the Waldo Canyon Fire.
"We've collected more than one-million pounds from this very generous community," said Lynne Telford, President and Ceo of Care & Share. "I am just blown away. I had no idea that the community would be this generous."
With a staff of 40 people, support for fire victims is setting records. Normal volunteer numbers are usually around 50 but since the fire, efforts have tripled to about 120 volunteers a day, Telford said.
"Since the 23rd of June, my staff has been here for extended hours collecting food," Telford said. "We're getting food out to the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, emergency shelters."
Care and Share has a massive 40,000 square foot warehouse. Inside are giant bins full of food for those who were displaced as well as firefighters.
Telford said monetary donations from the community go a long way with their purchasing power.
