Smoke from the Waldo Canyon Fire
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Highway 24 will open to the general public at 1 p.m., Sunday, officials announced at a press conference.
The highway is opening to residents only from 9 a.m., until 1. Those residents must prove their residency.
Total containment on the fire, according to fire officials, remains at 45 percent, totaling more than 17,600 acres.
A Red Flag Warning may make things difficult for firefighters on Sunday, Incident Commander Rich Harvey said.
"We are cautiously optimistic," he said. "We have the right tools in the right place to do this."
Police said two additional burglaries were reported, bringing the total to 24.
The National Guard said it has 165 of its troops on the ground. Fire officials said more than 1,534 people are assigned to the fire.
Another press briefing is scheduled for 2 p.m.
