Social media proves to be powerful during Waldo Canyon Fire

Nearly 50,000 people were active on FOX21 News' Facebook page during the Waldo Canyon Fire.

It's considered the most destructive wildfire in Colorado's history and social media has proved to be essential in notifying the public of important information.

On Twitter, the hashtag #WaldoCanyonFire was a trending topic for several days. Using this hashtag, citizens along with Colorado Springs authorities and the media have been relaying pivotal, life-saving information. Colorado Springs was also a trending topic.

Preliminary  tracking shows that more than 100,000 tweets have been sent using the hash tag #WaldoCanyonFire. Those tweets have been seen by more than 45 million people.

Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and smartphone apps have also proved to be powerful for relaying information at a moments notice. People can now readily access information at the same time as the media.
