DENVER (AP) -- Thousands of Denver-area janitors could go on strike as soon as next month if their union does not reach a new contract with janitorial companies.

The Denver Post reports that the Service Employees International Union Local 105, representing janitors that cover 95 percent of downtown Denver buildings, voted Thursday to authorize a strike. The janitors are seeking raises of about 25 cents an hour, along with better health-care benefits. Current wages range from $9.50 to $11.60 an hour. The current contract expires at the end of the month.

The janitorial companies told the newspaper they anticipate reaching an agreement. The union's vote Thursday authorizes a strike vote by July 2.
