PARK COUNTY, COLO. -- The latest wildfire burning in Park County is about 39 percent contained Thursday afternoon, and cooler temperatures have allowed firefighters to keep it from growing.
About 479 firefighters are fighting the Springer Fire, which started Sunday by humans, though U.S. Forest Service officials did not say how. They said it may be related to recreational shooting.
It is burning about 1,145 acres in the Pike National Forest about 3.5 miles from Lake George.
Wednesday and Thursday's temperatures were cooler with higher humidity, but fire officials said winds will pick up, and the temperature is expected to rise Friday with a fire watch again.
So far no one has been hurt and the wildfire hasn't burned any homes or buildings.
Evacuations remain in effect for Echo Valley, Wagon Tongue, and Circle C Ranch. Beaver Valley Ranch and Beaver Valley Estates residents can return home. An evacuation center has been established at the Woodland Park High School. Large animals may be taken to the fairgrounds in Cripple Creek. Small animals may be taken to the Teller County Animal Shelter.
This is the third wildfire in the county in two weeks.
