LAPORTE, COLO. (AP) -- Firefighters battling an out-of-control northern Colorado blaze have dramatically increased the number of structures destroyed or damaged from 18 to at least 118.
The increased estimate Monday came after crews got a better estimate of blackened areas where subdivisions once stood.
Firefighters said they couldn't immediately say how many structures were homes and how many were sheds, barns or other buildings.
The wildfire west of Fort Collins has nearly doubled to 58 square miles, forcing hundreds of evacuations.
Some residents sat in camp chairs on a hilltop overlooking the blackened foothills Monday, picking out areas where houses used to be before the fire swept through. Meanwhile, a helicopter sucked water from a reservoir and dropped it on nearby homes that were dangerously close to the flames.
