DURANGO, COLO. (AP) -- Durango police are serving eviction notices on camps set up by homeless people living on public lands.

According to the Durango Herald, authorities are posting signs giving occupants 48 hours to clean and vacate the area.

Police Chief Jim Martindale says most of the occupants have moved on, but the city is enforcing laws that bar camping on public land.

On Monday, Denver police began enforcing a new ordinance that bans eating, sleeping and storing personal possessions on public or private property without permission. Police say they will ticket or arrest violators who refuse to leave.
