COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Archers from all over the world came to compete for the U.S. Olympic team Sunday at the Grace Center for Athletics.

"We joke around saying it's 100 percent mental, 100 percent physical, but the archers are truly doing it themselves," Coach Mel Nichols said. "They have to be connected to their body, and with their equipment to get their arrow to hit the same spot every time."

Three men and three women will earn a spot on the team. Sunday, the shots at the event determined the men's team.

"I know I'm going to go there and have to shoot my best in order to win because everyone's going to be gunning for the number one guy," Brady Ellison said.

The 23-year-old earned the top spot in the competition; he's considered a front runner for the gold medal in London. Ellison is also a past contender in the Olympics after qualifying for Beijing.

"I was a baby. I'd only been a contender internationally for a year," Ellison said. "So we decided I'd go to every international shoot I could, go to everything I could to get experience in the last four years."

Archers Jake Kaminski and Jacob Wukie will join Ellison on the men's team. Joe Fanchin will be the team's alternate.

The women's team will be built differently. Miranda Leek snagged the number one woman's spot for London. The top three women will then go to the Final Olympic Qualification Tournament in Ogden, Utah on June 21.

"I'm happy to be done with trials, but I've got to keep ramping up my game and keep getting better and get ready for the Olympics, I suppose," Leek, a 19-year-old, said.

Khatuna Lorig, a four-time Olympian, and Jennifer Nichols, also placed in the top three women.
