COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach released a statement Tuesday following City Council's decision not to take legal action against outgoing Memorial Health System CEO Dr. Larry McEvoy in reference to his severance agreement.
Bach, who has voiced opposition to the now former Memorial Board's decision to pay McEvoy more than $1.1 million in a separation agreement, issued this statement Tuesday:
“Greater oversight and tighter control of all City owned institutions is paramount," Bach said in the statement. "This kind of disastrous outcome must not be repeated in the future. Moving forward, we should have a transparent community dialogue, with appropriate checks and balances in determining the best governance model for all city owned institutions including Colorado Springs Utilities.”
Memorial's Board of Trustees approved McEvoy's outgoing separation agreement in late April, forcing Bach to write to council. After the board did not reduce the deal following council's request, Bach and council removed them.
On Friday, council told the City Attorney not to pursue legal action, citing they didn't want to waste more money going through the process.
