COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- At $3.81 a gallon for regular unleaded gas filling up the tank means emptying your wallet.
"For little under a half tank it was $77," Jon Heitman, a Colorado Springs driver said.
According to AAA Colorado, prices have jumped more than 75 cents a gallon over the past three months.
So, with pump prices hovering near $4 a gallon, Joseph Harris a gas station attendant for the Sinclair gas station on Academy Blvd. and Constitution Ave., gets his fair share of angry customers looking for answers.
"[They'll] walk in here and say Joseph you need to do something about them gas prices. And I'll look at her and say I'll call Obama right now," Jospeh Harris, a Sinclair gas station worker said.
Turns out gas stations don't make their money at the pump, their business comes from their convenience stores. By buying items in bulk and at wholesale prices, they're able to markup their sweets, snacks, and soda by 10-15 percent.
"Our gas is $3.81 a gallon now we're buying it at $3.79 a gallon, so wer're only making two pennies out of that gasoline," Harris, said.
Then, once you factor in credit card usage fees, the station is just breaking even.
None the less, the Sinclair gas station tries to keep their prices as low as possible and hand out freebies to defuse any frustrated customers.
