COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Police officers are investigating after a body was found at the Whispering Pines apartment complex.
The complex is on East Fountain Boulevard near Chelton Road.
Officers said they were notified by a resident that there appeared to be a body inside a car in the parking lot.
"Right now we've got a team of people here. We did notice obvious trauma to the victim's body," Barbara Miller, spokesperson for CSPD, said.
Santos Casarez, the property manager, said he discovered the victim after a resident told him there was a lot of blood near one of the cars in the parking lot.
"So me and two of my maintenance men we went out here to look at it, and we did notice a lot of blood," Casarez said.
He added at first he didn't notice the man inside.
"The first time I looked in there was, I didn't see anything, and then when I looked in the second time that's when I was like 'wow there's a dead body in here,'" he said.
Casarez dialed 911 and was asked by the dispatcher to check and see if the victim was still breathing.
"I went over to the driver's side door, opened it up and when I was getting ready to pull him out, I looked, and I kind made the call myself saying 'unfortunately this man is deceased,' and at that time that's when the fire department showed up, no more than 10 seconds after that," Casarez said.
Both the CSPD's Metro Crime Lab and the Homicide Team responded to the scene.
"What our investigation will reveal now is who this person is, whether or not he's a resident or just visiting someone, and then of course what happened," Miller said.
Many residents watched as police processed the scene. Some said they are left feeling a little uneasy.
"It's kind of a shock, you know, you come outside, you want to have a good day playing outside and then all of a sudden you got somebody in the car," Willie Martin, who lives in the neighborhood, said.
Martin said he heard gunshots Sunday night but didn't think anything about them.
"I heard a few gun shots last night but don't never really think about it because you know there is so much that goes on around here anyway, so you would think they're actually shooting in the sky around here," Martin said.
Casarez admitted that the situation is scary but said Whispering Pines is still a safe place to live.
"The last incident that ever took place was maybe four or five years ago, but I mean it's family oriented, I've got military here and it's pretty quiet. For something like that to take place here at the complex, it's shocking," Martin said.
Officers have released few details but have said the victim is an adult male.
They did not speculate on whether there was foul play involve, and have not labeled it a homicide investigation at this time.
They said it will be up to the coroner to determine the manner and cause of death.
"Hopefully they find out who did it 'cause you know it would make a lot of people feel safer," Martin said.
