COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A fire that erupted in a school parking lot was caused by a "Molotov cocktail" according to Colorado Springs Police officers.
Around 5 a.m. Thursday, a Doherty High School staff member saw a fire in the southeast parking lot. By the time he ran into the school to get a fire extinguisher and came back, the fire was out.
Officers later arrived and determined the cocktail device was thrown into the parking lot. A Molotov cocktail is a small, improvised "fire bomb" similar to a hand grenade in size and used to set objects on fire.
Safety is the number one priority for Colorado Springs School District 11 and they are proud of the quick thinking of the Doherty building manager.
"As an example of someone looking out for suspicious activity our building manager was doing his rounds and checking the school property and found a fire burning," Devra Ashby, spokeswoman for D-11 said.
Officers said the parking lot was empty at the time, and nobody was hurt. School continued as usual.
Officials had hoped to use surveillance video to identify a suspect but the images are too grainy.
