FREMONT COUNTY, COLO. -- Officials with the Fremont County Sheriff's Office said one person was killed and another injured in a skydiving accident Sunday morning.
It happened around 9 a.m. near the Fremont County Airport, east of Canon City.
Captain Don Pinover said a 35-year-old student skydiver from Crested Butte and his 28-year-old instructor from Fountain made a tandem jump from approximately 8,000 feet.
He said during the jump something went wrong and both the main and reserve chutes opened.
The two chutes then became entangled.
Pinover said the student skydiver was killed upon impact with the ground and the instructor was airlifted to Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs in critical condition.
The instructor reportedly had done more than 600 solo jumps and 50 tandem jumps.
It was reportedly the student's first time skydiving.
The Fremont County Sheriff's Office has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
The names of the men involved have not been released.
