BOONE, COLO. -- More than 60 animals seized by Pueblo Animal Services in an animal cruelty case are now up for adoption after a cost of care bond expired.
Officials executed the warrant in January on the property of Valerie Harris in Boone and found 67 animals living in "deplorable" conditions. Harris was charged, and the animals were taken to the Pueblo shelter as well as the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) and other livestock facilities for further care.
Harris posted the bond to keep ownership of the animals, but that bond has since expired, which allows the humane society to find permanent homes for them.
"All of the animals have received veterinary examinations, medical treatment, and much needed attention while in our care," Jan McHugh-Smith, President and CEO of the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, said in a statement. Some of them will need continued veterinarian visits and socialization so they have the best opportunity for a full recovery in their permanent homes."
HSPPR officials said all the animals up for adoption can be found here. They are also looking for donations to help cover the cost of care.
